What are Pokemon EV's? [(Click here to skip down to the 5 Min EV Training Guide)](#EVTrainingGuide)

Pokemon EV's stand for Effort Values. These give bonuses to Pokemon stats like Attack, Speed, Sp. Attack, Defense, Sp. Defense and HP. EV's are gained as an additional bonus on top of the normal increases from leveling up. In regular gameplay and normal battle, EV's are earned depending on the Pokemon that you defeat. For example, defeating some Pokemon could give bonuses to Speed while other Pokemon could give bonuses to Attack.  In previous generations, it was very difficult to figure out what EV's your Pokemon had earned. If you wanted to max out the EV's in a certain stat, you often had to seek out and fight the same Pokemon over and over. You can imagine how time consuming this can be! Pokemon can have a maximum of 510 EV's total. You cannot have more than 252 EV's in any one stat.

Guide to Faster EV Training in Pokemon X & Y

Pokemon X and Y made looking up Pokemon EV's and training for specific EV's much more intuitive and easy to do. There are three ways:

MethodWalkthrough
Through Battle(Time varies) This is the old method from previous gens, requiring you to seek out and battle Pokemon that give you specific EV's. A quick search on the internet can give you a run of easy-to-find Pokemon and locations to level each EV. * This method can take 30 minutes to 2 hrs depending on what EV training items you are using and the Pokemon and area you choose to battle.
Super Training(45 -120 minutes) Access Super Training area in Pokemon X&Y by pressing the L/R buttons on your 3DS. The first screen with the Effort-O-Meter you see will show you the EV distribution of the Pokemon in your party. Follow the instructions to play the Super Training minigames. You will need to use a Pokemon to unlock up to Level 3 of Super Training, which gives the max of 12 EV's gained per minigame. Clicking on the punching bag or completing Super Training minigames will give you Training Bags, which give EV's or boosts to Super Train more easily. To use a Training Bag, equip it and tap anywhere on the screen until it breaks. Items and Pokerus DO NOT affect your EV gains in Super Training. You can sometimes get Reset bags by clicking the punching bag on the Super Training Effort-O-Meter screen. These are VERY helpful to reset your Pokemon's EV's if you messed up somewhere! * Depending on how good you get at these mini games, this will take about 45 minutes to two hours to fully EV train one Pokemon.
Super Easy EV Training Trick(RECOMMENDED, 5-10 MINS) You must first beat the game and have access to the Battle Maison for the 6 Battle Items Acquire an Oddish with Sweet Scent Ability. This ability always finds Horde battles AKA large groups of Pokemon to speed up your EV training Get all 6 Battle Items from Battle Maison. If you haven't done this already, it will take about an hour to get these items which cost 96 BP total. Optional: Get Pokerus and contract it to the Pokemon you want to EV train. The fastest way to get a Pokemon with Pokerus is through trade - ask a friend or look in a forum. Pokerus will double EV gain. Teach your Pokemon a multi-target move so you can take out Hordes of Pokemon quickly. Or bring a Pokemon along that does have a multi-target move and equip EXP share. Equip the Power Item for the stat you want to EV train. Fly to the following areas to fight hordes of the Pokemon below, for each stat you want to EV train: You will need to fight 5 hordes + 1 individual of each Pokemon above in order to max out EV's for one stat. After you have maxed out your 510 total EV's, you can use the Effort-O-Meter on Super Training to double check that your Pokemon is fully EV trained. Following the items and steps above, you can EV train as many Pokemon as you want in under 10 minutes each!

Items to Help EV Train Faster

  • Pokerus –  This is a virus that wild Pokemon and traded Pokemon sometimes carry. It doubles EVs gained and can be combined with Macho Brace and Power Items. Pokerus lasts for about 2 days. However, if you put a Pokemon with Pokerus in the PC, it will last until you take it out.
  • Macho Brace – This item doubles EVs gained, halves holder’s Speed, can be combined with Pokerus
  • Power Items – These items give 4 additional EV points to a corresponding stat, halves holder’s Speed. They can be combined with Pokerus.
  • Reset Bag - This item is acquired freely through Super Training (See above). They will reset your Pokemon's EV's completely if you messed up or want to re-spec them.
  • Exp Share - If you plan on using another Pokemon to clear hordes quickly, make sure to equip Exp Share so the other Pokemon in your party will also gain EV's.
