Owning Pokemon Go gyms is the only currently available method for getting PokeCoins without paying for them. Once your team has taken over a gym, you can leave your Pokemon there to battle other trainers. As soon as you leave your Pokemon there, you can collect 10 PokeCoins.
To collect the PokeCoins, go to the Shop button in the main menu page. There will be a small green button at the top right of your screen. Click on this to receive your “Defender Bonus” of 10 PokeCoins and a little bit of Stardust. This bonus refreshes every 21 hours.

You can leave a Pokemon in up to 10 gyms at once, meaning that you can collect a total of up to 100 PokeCoins at once. Remember to collect them and your Stardust every day.
