While you're catching Pokemon in Pokemon Go, you'll notice that there are two different circles surrounding the pokemon when you go to catch them. One is white and the other circle varies in color. The color of the second circle indicates the difficulty of catching a Pokemon. While you're capturing Pokemon, you will realize that there is always a white outer circle and a changing inner-circle. The white outer circle indicates the Pokemon target to aim for, while the inner-circle indicates difficulty. The inner-circle can be three different colors: green, yellow and red. Each color will require you to react accordingly when your Pokemon has the applicable color.

What does each Pokemon Go circle color mean?

  • Green Circle - The Pokemon is the easiest to catch, could be caught on the first try.
  • Yellow Circle - The Pokemon is the harder to catch, this Pokemon may take a couple of tries to catch.
  • Red Circle - The Pokemon is the hardest to catch. If you don't throw a perfect strike, odds are this Pokemon will run away.

You may also see Pokemon with a circle that is more orange than red or yellow. The closer to red the circle is, the harder the Pokemon will be. Once you've figured out the difficulty level of the Pokemon, develop a strategy for tackling these different difficulties. Based on the color of the circle it would be wise to utilize the different types of Poke Balls such as a Great Ball, as well as your Razz Berries.

CP and circle target color in Pokemon Go

The CP of a pokemon effects how hard it is to catch in Pokemon Go. The higher a wild Pokemon's CP, the more difficult it is to catch. Pokemon with high CP will most likely have a yellow or red target circle. As your trainer level gets higher, you will be able to find and catch higher CP Pokemon. When you try to catch a high CP pokemon, use items like razz berries, ultra balls, and curveball throws to make the pokemon easier to catch. When you're a level 5 trainer, catching even a 50 CP Zubat may be difficult. But once you've leveled up more, you'll be finding 100 CP rare Pokemon with yellow or even green circles. When Should You Attempt to Catch the Pokemon?

If you're trying to gain more experience points, you should flick the Poke ball when the colored circle is larger. If you're more focused on catching whatever Pokemon it is, you should flick the ball when the circle is smaller. If you flick your Pokeball when the circle is larger, you'll be more likely to get at least a "Nice" bonus for an additional experience boost. If the colored circle is smaller, the Pokemon Go app will make it easier to catch the Pokemon. However, many users have anecdotal data of Pokemon being more likely to be captured if you manage to snag a catch bonus, whether it is "Nice" or "Excellent". Find out which method works best for you and stick with it!

How to catch Pokemon with Red or Yellow Circles

If you find Pokemon with red or yellow circles, you'll need to use special items like Razz berries and aim your Pokeballs carefully to snag them. If the Pokemon pops out of the Poke ball, you may need to use more items or hit the Pokemon more in the center. You can also try doing curve balls. Many players have reported that curve balls are more likely to capture Pokemon in Pokemon Go, although there is not yet enough data to back this claim up. If you have Great balls or better, try using them instead of a Poke ball to catch a high CP Pokemon. You may want to save these special items for more rare Pokemon rather than wasting them on high CP but common Pokemon like Zubat or Rattata. However, getting some high CP Pokemon regardless of the Pokemon's commonness is a good idea -- it'll be easier to battle in gyms with high CP Pokemon. Even a high CP Pidgeotto can do a lot of damage.
